Phobias are extremely common and estimates show there are as many as 10 million people with phobias in the UK. A phobia can be described as an intense and excessive fear of an object, place or situation.

There are 2 main types of phobia - Specific Phobia, which is a fear of something such as an animal or certain food, heights, flying or going to the dentist and Social Phobia which is fear of social or performance situations.

When the phobic person comes into contact with, or even thinks about being near the feared object or situation they can immediately feel very anxious. They may even try to escape the situation.

Many phobic people try to avoid encountering the feared object or situation wherever possible, which can be fairly easy if the phobia is something like snakes but other sorts of phobias such as cats, birds or outdoor spaces can start to severely limit people’s lives.
